Gif or Jif? The age old question that every person eventually asks their friends, and depending on their answer, they may not be friends afterwards. I’m here to try to settle this silly argument with some cold hard facts. So is it (G)if with a hard G as in “Gift” well let’s find this out. Gif stands for Graphics Interchange Format, so it would make sense to pronounce it Gif and not Jif because of the G in “Graphics” but some people disagree because the creator of the Gif, Steve Wilhite announced to the world, it was pronounced “Jif” but he is wrong. Steve Wilhite may of invented the famous file format, but he didn’t create Acronyms… or the English language for that matter. Even more support to the Hard G team is that is the closest cousin to Gif is simply Gift, so let me ask you, are you going to get a “Jift” for your best friend for Christmas? Didn’t think so, even more points for Hard G team is that computers with text to speech will pronounce it Gif with a hard G and not a soft G like Jif. So is it Gif with a hard G? Technically and Probably yes it’s Gif and not Jif, but that doesn’t stop people from saying Jif because most of the Soft G supporters follow the logic of “The Creator Said so” and argue it’s Jif which is usually their only argument they know to use, besides the “Giraffe” argument but then again Gift is more closely related to Gif rather than Giraffe with a soft G. But what do you think? I’ll let you decide for yourself if it’s Gif or Jif.
